A group of Bengalureans united by their passion for food. Nothing quite compares to the power of food to bring people together. In a bustling city like Bengaluru, where dining options are abundant, food enthusiasts are embracing the joy of sharing meals with like-minded individuals and forming lasting friendships. The Dastarkhwan Club, a local food community, organizes vibrant meet-ups for food lovers to explore various eateries in the city.
Co-founder Akash Devaraju emphasizes that the community's bond goes beyond food, encompassing a diverse range of interests all stemming from a shared love for culinary delights. Member Tharini Thakur highlights the community's curiosity about the origins and cultural influences of different foods. What started as a small group has now grown to include over 60 members in a WhatsApp group and over 600 pending RSVPs.
The magic of sharing a meal has been the driving force behind the community's gatherings. Akash recalls the group's humble beginnings during a memorable Iftaar meal with friends, and how the shared experience inspired them to continue coming together over food. The group's name, "Dastarkhwan," was coined during one of their outings.
For Abhishek Gupta, a member of multiple communities in the city, being part of the Dastarkhwan Club is a personal and enriching experience, unlike any other he has encountered. Being able to cook and share meals with others is not just about food; it's a journey through history and culture."Visiting someone's home in Kashmir provided me with a deeper understanding of their culture and traditions," he shares. Meghna, another member, comments, "I appreciate the effort put into curating unique events, and having someone from the culture present to explain everything adds to the experience." Exploring food together as a community involves various activities: Rozana involves visiting a restaurant where the owner shares insights on culinary history, Safarnama includes food walks to explore different cuisines in food streets, and Mehfil allows people to open their homes and share their cultural experiences with visitors.
